Make These 5 Critical Mindset Shifts
A 25-year veteran of one of the world's most prestigious professional services firms got the call no executive expects.
After a career most people would consider untouchable, he was let go. He was now facing a market that is nearly impossible to navigate, especially in his current state of shock. As I shared the challenges ahead of him, he told me, “Looking back, I wish I had this information before this downsizing. That company was a big piece of me, and suddenly, it’s gone."
He didn't lack talent. He certainly didn't lack experience. What he lacked was a mindset built for a world where no tenure is guaranteed.
That story isn't unusual anymore. It's not even rare.
[In my newsletter last week, I shared today’s reality: whether you work for yourself or someone else, you're already in the “gig” economy.] The disruption I predicted in 2018 has accelerated at warp speed, and 3–5-year tenures are now the norm for most executives.
This week, I'll show you how to adapt.
I've identified five critical shifts needed. These aren't just philosophical differences; they're practical mindset shifts that directly impact your career security and future opportunities.
Shift 1: From Company-Centric Network to Deliberately Curated Community
Most executives rely on the ready-made, relatively narrow cocoon of connections consisting of their team, department, company, and industry. Then disruption hits, and suddenly their entire network is affected simultaneously.
The executives who navigate change well think about their network differently.
They deliberately curate their network for today, tomorrow, and beyond.
Most importantly, they look beyond their industry.
Why? Because you can't disrupt yourself without exposing yourself to new ideas, and new ideas rarely come from people doing exactly what you're doing.
One of my clients learned this when her organization announced it was shutting down. Her financial runway was short. She didn't have time to start building relationships from scratch. What saved her was that she'd already been doing it consistently after embracing the Bulletproof strategy.
She didn't find her next role. Her next role found her.
The person leaving handpicked her as a successor for a position she told me she never would have considered pursuing on her own. Her search took less than half the time she expected.
Her secret? "I leveraged my pre-built network. That's how I found my next position."
Take Action This Week: Identify three professionals outside your industry who are facing similar challenges to yours.
Are you a retail executive navigating AI disruption, changing consumer loyalty, and the reinvention of the in-store experience in 2026? Connect with banking leaders who are already adapting to automation, personalization, and rapidly shifting customer expectations.
Are you an operations leader optimizing supply chains? Talk to logistics professionals in completely different sectors.
Make one connection this week. Not to ask for anything, just to learn how they approach problems similar to yours.
Shift 2: From Head Down to Head Up and Looking Around
Most executives stay in their lane, head down, blinders on. (They consider it disloyal to keep an eye open for what's next, even though their company's talent acquisition team always has an eye open for future talent.) When your next role isn't top of mind until word is out about a reorganization, you will find yourself competing with everyone else who just got the same news.
The shift is to remain nimble, open, and aware of opportunities. That’s how you ensure you are never caught flat-footed again.
Take Action This Week:Create a target list of 5 companies where your expertise would be genuinely valuable. Not because you're looking to leave, but because you're building awareness of where your skills could translate. Update this list quarterly.
Then pay attention. When you see news about growth initiatives, leadership changes, or strategic pivots that align with your expertise, make note of it.
That is how you develop market intelligence, which helps keep you ahead of disruption.
Shift 3: From Reluctant to Change to Highly Adaptable
Perhaps the greatest vulnerability for many executives is their reluctance to change. Yet reorganizations are often structured around executives known to be willing to adapt.
If the company can't survive by clinging to the status quo, neither can its employees.
Don’t wait until change is forced upon you. Start building the reputation now of someone who leans into change, learns quickly, and can be trusted to lead through uncertainty.
Take Action This Week: Identify one significant change happening in your industry right now that you've been resisting or avoiding (no surprise–the answer will most likely be connected to AI).
Instead of resisting, lean in and learn.
Shift 4: From Company-Directed Learning to Self-Directed Mastery
Annual development plans are rare these days, and those offered are driven toward skills that exclusively benefit that company. . . but it also means your professional growth is being curated by someone whose primary interest isn't your long-term career.
One of your biggest competitive advantages today is to always be on the cutting edge, if not the bleeding edge, of your area of expertise.
Take Action This Week: Look out to the horizon and beyond so you are ahead of the curve. Commit to continually adding new skills to expand your versatility and value.
How do you do this?
Subscribe to one newsletter or podcast known for its cutting-edge content.
Take the first module of an online course in an emerging skill area.
Read an article about a technology or business model that doesn't exist in your company yet.
Attend one webinar on a topic your company isn't currently focused on.
The content matters less than establishing the habit: YOU control your learning agenda, not your employer.
Shift 5: Building Your 401ME
Too many executives tie all their wealth to one company's stock options or benefits package.
If your income stopped today, how long could you maintain your current lifestyle?
Take Action This Week: Start building your 401ME account, a fund separate from retirement that gives you career flexibility.
Also, look at your total compensation. How much is tied to your current employer's stock or options that only vest if you stay? True financial security is portable.
The Meta-Shift: From Reactive to Proactive
Notice what all five of these shifts have in common? They're proactive, rather than reactive.
Executives tend to wait until they're forced to act. They update their resume when they lose their job. They expand their network when they need referrals. They develop new skills when their current ones become obsolete. They build financial reserves after they've burned through their savings.
And then they say the same thing.
I wish I had done this sooner.
Here's the beautiful irony: when you adopt these five mindset shifts while you're still employed, you actually become more valuable to your current employer. Why?
- A broad network makes you more effective at getting things done
- Market awareness helps you spot opportunities and threats earlier
- Adaptability makes you the go-to person for critical initiatives
- Self-directed learning keeps you ahead of industry curves
- Financial security lets you take smart risks instead of playing it safe
You're not preparing to leave. You're preparing to have choices.
And having choices is what gives you power in every career conversation you'll ever have.
Your company doesn't control your future. The economy doesn't control your future. Even AI doesn't control your future.
The only person who controls your future is you.
But only if you start thinking and acting differently, right now.
Stay in motion. And remember: you're not preparing for failure. You're preparing for success on your own terms.
In the comments, share the best career advice you've ever received. Your answer might be exactly what someone in this community needs to hear today.
